We’ve talked about Pink Shirt Day a few times on the blog, including a bit of a personal piece about having survived bullying myself growing up. When the opportunity presents itself to support this initiative, it doesn’t matter what’s on my calendar, we clear it off and get ready to spread the love. Last year, we had the immense pleasure of visiting Metropolis at Metrotown with Eschelle from Mumfection.com, Jamie from StylingTheInside.com, Mary from MaryInVancity.com and Michael from MichaelKwan.com. Our crew was on hand to celebrate kindness in a fun way that left not only us feeling overwhelmed with the best feelings, but we also had the chance to make some guests days a bit brighter as well!
Each year Metropolis at Metrotown invites visitors to the mall for Pink Shirt Day celebrations, random acts of kindness, and some special surprises! Guests this year can enjoy a special performance by local students from 7 Burnaby elementary and community schools includin: Maywood Community School, Windsor Elementary, Lochdale Community School, Gilmore Community School, Second Street Community School, Montecito Elementary, and Edmonds Community School as well as a few super special surprises! The kids behind some of these surprises are seriously the sweetest and many take the “Be Kind” message very seriously! Armed with personally made cards, big smiles and a plan to bring some extra joy
Be Kind at Metropolis at Metrotown for Pink Shirt Day
Spreading acts of kindness in support of 2019 Pink Shirt Day anti-bullying campaign on February 27th!
This event is a personal favourite of mine, as the schools flood into Metropolis at Metrotown and shoppers stare at a sea of pink shirts, laughing and smiling kids who are sneakily planning their kindness ambushes, the feeling around the mall shifts from consumer to community. Last year, we were stopped many times asking about our shirts and why there were so many people in the mall wearing them which opened up the line of communication to talk about the anti-bullying initiative, why it was important for us to support it and how they can spread some kindness themselves.
Last year, the bloggers crew paid for groceries for guests, handed out flowers and DAVIDsTEA coupons to seniors, surprised guests (like the lovely one below!) with their purchases taken care of by us and so much more. We ran around the mall like a bunch of pink shirt wearing fairy godmothers granting kindness wishes all around. It was a bit amazing for us to see how many people were surprised by kindness, almost taken aback and a bit suspicious of it.
We’re hoping this year, with your help, that we can spread kindness in a way that encourages that momentum to keep going. The lovely man pictured below didn’t even realize I was paying for his books until we left, he chased me down through the mall to thank me and take a photo with us. Not going to lie, spreading kindness feels REALLY GOOD you guys. We’ll be back again this year so make sure to come say hi if you see us!
Guests are invited to join in to celebrate “Be Kind” this year and by sharing your kindness pledge you can not only support the CKNW Orphans’ Fund but also enter to win a pretty amazing prize. Head over to the Metropolis at Metrotown Instagram page and share your pledge on how you can #METMakeNice for Pink Shirt Day (and every day!). For every pledge made, Metropolis at Metrotown will donate $1 to the CKNWOrphans’ Fund (up to $1000). By tagging a friend as well, customers have the chance to be entered to win a $500 shopping spree and a $500 gift card to be donated to their favourite local charity. Super easy ways to win + support an amazing local charity!
“For this year’s campaign we are excited to be working with 7 local Burnaby elementary and community schools to spread kindness to our shoppers and community. Pink Shirt Day is an important program that raises awareness in our communities to stand up to bullying and encourage kindness, tolerance, and solidarity,” said Judy Black, Marketing Director of Metropolis at Metrotown.
